Creating Flexible Learning Environments Through Interoperable Technology Solutions

by StrataTech, IntraEdge, and Unicon

Unicon is deeply committed to advancing interoperability for higher education and edtech and equipping organizations with the tools and infrastructure they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. We believe seamless integration of technology systems is essential for unlocking digital education's full potential. We can empower institutions to deliver a more cohesive and impactful learning experience by bridging the gaps between diverse platforms.

StrataTech Education Group, like many forward-thinking educational institutions in recent years, recognized an oncoming need for a more integrated and interoperable digital platform to enhance its OcuWeld VR welding simulation tool. Initially tied to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) exclusively, the tool faced flexibility, scalability, and user authentication limitations. StrataTech sought to decouple OcuWeld from Canvas for a broader, LMS-agnostic approach.

In collaboration with IntraEdge, Unicon stepped in to provide an interoperability-centered solution. The team reengineered OcuWeld, integrating it with a new Content Management System (CMS) and implementing Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI). This approach enabled seamless connectivity with any LTI-supporting LMS, allowing StrataTech to deliver content across multiple platforms while simplifying the authentication process.

The introduction of the CMS allowed StrataTech to manage and deliver a wide range of content types—quizzes, assignments, videos, and more—across different platforms. This transformation streamlined content delivery, reduced reliance on Canvas, and improved operational efficiency. The platform’s design, focused on scalability, positioned StrataTech for future growth, reducing vendor lock-in and expanding market reach.

Unicon’s work with StrataTech highlights the power of interoperability in higher education. By enabling seamless integration and data exchange, Unicon helped StrataTech create a consistent, visually enhanced learning experience that is flexible and ready for future technological advancements. This project, recognized with a Bronze medal at the 1EdTech Learning Impact Awards, displays Unicon’s commitment to transforming educational tools and platforms, empowering institutions to navigate digital transformation confidently.
